Chex Quest HD Trailer

Game Overview

Chex Quest HD is a remake of the original Chex Quest included with boxes of Chex cereal in the late '80s. In this family friendly classic, the Intergalactic Federation of Snacks' outpost on the remote planet of Bazoik has been overrun by evil cereal-eating creatures from another dimension. These slimy "Flemoids" have taken the citizens of Bazoik captive. In the latest rendition of Chex Quest, the player can now assume the role of the Chex Mix Squadron members and 'zorch' their way to victory.

Features:
- Play as one of 6 unlockable members of Chex Mix Squadron.
- Choose between single-player or split-screen multiplayer mode.
- Unlock Chex Quest Multiplayer codes through select packages of Chex Mix for a brief period.

'IFS Research Center' Map Overview

IFS Research Center is one of three new multiplayer maps made specifically for the remake of Chex Quest, Chex Quest HD. Due to project time constraints, the map itself could not use many (if any) custom assets. Consequently, I was tasked with crafting the map using primarily pre-existing modular pieces.

Challenges/Development Process

Due to these project constraints, I decided to utilize an already established Chex Quest location as a base for the design. The main laboratory area in level 3 of the single player campaign served as a solid candidate. Inspired by this original framework, I began to sketch a map - adding rooms and connection points to support a 4 player first person shooter experience. With the sketch completed, I began laying out the area with BSP in the Unreal 4 engine. Afterwards, I set the modular assets atop the BSP, making sure to adjust and iterate as I progressed. Oftentimes, the design had to be trimmed or scaled based on the size of the tiling wall or floor pieces.

Playtesting for 'IFS Research Center' also proved rather tricky. The limitations of both time and assets required that we get creative with any needed/suggested alterations.

Results

The map itself is two levels. The top and bottom section connect to one another through two sets of stairs and a large wall opening. In the center of the map is a large, open laboratory. This main area houses a laser beam contraption. Turning on this machine will burn away the goo or 'flem' to reveal a hidden weapon. Branching from this main area are several interconnecting areas. These areas serve to house the player spawns and additional weaponry/pickups.
